Optimising for a Different. Better. in-app experience

As a committed member of BodyFit Training (BFT) in Singapore, I appreciated the thoughtfully curated workouts that positively impacted the local fitness community.

However, the recently launched in-house heart rate monitor, BFT³, and its accompanying mobile app left the community dissatisfied due to a subpar user experience. This self-initiated case study aims to explore and enhance the user experience of the BFT³ mobile app.

TIMELINE

May 2022

CHALLENGES

There are currently two separate BodyFit Training (BFT) mobile apps that members are required to download - one for the newly launched BFT³ heart rate monitor and another for the booking workout sessions.

How can I enhance and integrate these two mobile apps to create a unified and streamlined mobile app experience?

Existing BFT Mobile Apps

OBJECTIVES

The initial goal is to identify the pain points, gaps, and opportunities within the new BFT³ mobile app. Following this, I will assess the feasibility of integrating both mobile apps into a unified, comprehensive solution that delivers an optimal user experience for all members.

APPROACH

→ Research

Initiating this project, I conducted a comprehensive design audit of both existing apps to evaluate their current capabilities and identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.

In addition, I conducted five one-on-one interviews with current users to gather feedbacks, understand the challenges they encountered, and explore features and functions they wished to see improved or added.

→ Strategy and Design Principles

Based on the insights gathered, I established three core design principles to guide the development of the new mobile app, aimed at bringing the energetic and fun-loving community of the physical gym into the digital space:

• Convenience
• Reward
• Enjoyment

OUTCOMES

Bid farewell to the hassle of switching between two separate apps!

The newly revamped BFT mobile app is genuinely 'Different' and 'Better.' It not only resolves key user pain points that previously hindered app usage but also aims to foster increased user engagement through the proposed enhanced features.

Feedback from the local BFT community has been overwhelmingly positive following the presentation of these proposed improvements. I am hopeful that BFT will consider adopting and implementing some of these solutions in the app in the near future.

→ Streamlining Interactions

Everything You Need at a Glance

Users may now easily access various key features, be informed of their upcoming bookings and the latest updates all within fingertips.

Forging a Stronger Community Online

Prioritising the visibility and interactivity of all connected users on ‘Workout Summary’ to facilitate greater interactions between members.

Dismiss All Notifications in a Swift

Bid farewell to the laborious ‘row by row’ dismissal of notifications~ Users may now have them simply dismissed in just one touch.

Easily Manage All Friend Requests

Users may now simply ‘Add’, ‘Accept’ and ‘Reject’ all friend requests via the ‘Community’ page. A suggested list of connections is also provided based on the user’s network.

Personalising Targets to Achieve Your Goals

No more confusing description and interactions on BFT Metrics! Users can now fully utilise this feature to calculate their prescriptive load based on their 5RM during each workout session to truly achieve their targeted strength goals.

→ Enhanced Offerings

Optimising The Booking Process

Users may now book their workout sessions all in one place instead of having to switch in-between apps.

Sharing Special Moments

Users may now upload photo on their own ‘Workout Summary’ post to encapsulate that post workout glow with their gym buddies. They may also ‘Like’, ‘Comment’ and ‘Share’ their post onto any social media platforms.

Gamifying Workouts for The Community

Apart from the usual workouts and seasonal ‘8 Weeks Challenge’, the ‘Studio Mini Challenge’ is proposed to bring members together through a series of workout challenge on a monthly basis. Top 3 winners of the studio podium will be rewarded!

REFLECTION

  1. I am the user, and I am not the user. In redesigning this product, I must take a dualistic approach to genuinely empathise with the needs and concerns of a broader audience.

  1. Users must be at the core of the product development process. The absence of user testing and feedback gathering prior to launch can significantly impact usability and adoption rates.

  1. Thoughtfully designed interactions create a more rewarding user experience.
